Averting a Catastrophe
2018 marked two anniversaries in the turbulent history of what was Yugoslavia as a result of a series of political upheavals and conflicts during the early 1990s. That year marked 20 years since the start of the Kosovan war between Albanians and Serbians and ten years since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia.
“Averting a Catastrophe” tells in words and images the brutality and the compassion of the situation captured by Gordon during his time spent in Kosovo in 2001 as a guest of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines. Devastated buildings, casualties and vehicle bombings contrast with the efforts of the peace-keeping forces trying to bring stability and safety back to a beleaguered country and its citizens.
The book includes a contribution from Jennifer Jones, formerly of the British and Commonwealth Office, who was seconded to the United Nations mission in Kosovo as an election adviser working closely with Albanian and Serbian politicians.
